What Is Tajweed | Why Every Muslim Must Learn These Rules

Tajweed is the science of reciting the Quran with correct pronunciation, proper Makharij, and accurate application of recitation rules. It teaches how each letter is produced, how long sounds are held, and how words are connected. Passed down through generations, Tajweed preserves the beauty and accuracy of Quranic recitation as it was taught by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

We help children and adults learn the Quran with Tajweed through our structured online classes. Our qualified tutors provide step-by-step guidance, helping students improve pronunciation, avoid common mistakes, and build confidence. Whether starting after Noorani Qaida or improving existing recitation, our personalized lessons make learning Tajweed simple and effective for all ages.

Who it's for

Learn Quran Online with Tajweed | Who This Course Suits

Our quran tajweed classes online serve five distinct types of learners. The entry point and pace are different for each.

Children aged 4 to 12 who have completed the Noorani Qaida

Tajweed for kids starts where the Noorani Qaida left off. Your child can read Arabic text. Now we correct their Makharij, introduce Qalqalah, and teach Ghunna in the letters they already recognize. Sessions are 30 to 40 minutes with frequent repetition and gentle positive correction.

Adult beginners who can read the Quran but without rules

This is the most common adult enrollment in our online Tajweed course. You recite Al-Fatiha 17 times a day but your Ain sounds like Hamza and your Qalqalah is absent. You need correction, not a beginner reading class. Our Intensive plan is built for this.

Non-Arab adults learning to read and apply Tajweed simultaneously

If you are learning to read Arabic and want to apply Tajweed rules from day one, rather than read first and correct later, our Starter plan covers both in parallel. Tajweed for beginners online taught this way takes longer per lesson but produces more accurate pronunciation long-term.

Reverts and new Muslims

You have recently accepted Islam and you want to learn to recite Al-Fatiha and the short Surahs you pray with every day. Our tutors who work with new Muslims are patient, non-judgmental, and know that this is both a technical journey and a personal one.

Students preparing for Ijazah in Quran recitation

Ijazah requires reciting the full Quran in front of a qualified scholar, applying all Tajweed rules. Our Level 4 curriculum and advanced tutors prepare students for this. The Hafs ‘an Asim narration, which is the most widely recited Qirat, is the standard we teach.

Getting Started

Tajweed for Beginners Online | Book Your Free Trial Now

And such a person exerts himself to learn the Qur’an by heart, and recites it with great difficulty, will have a double reward.” [Sahih Bukhari 4937]

The hadith above is well-known. What is less often discussed is the first part: the one who recites skillfully. Tajweed is how you become that person. It is not reserved for scholars or hafizs. Every Muslim who prays recites the Quran 17 times a day. Each one of those recitations is an opportunity to give the words of Allah their due.

The trial session costs nothing. Your tutor will tell you exactly what mistakes you are making and which level to start at. That information alone is worth 30 minutes.

Sessions available 7 days a week, all time zones.

Our Tajweed Tutors | Quran Teachers Kids and Adults Trust

The quality of Tajweed teaching depends entirely on the quality of the teacher’s own recitation. A tutor who cannot produce correct Qalqalah cannot teach it. A tutor who was not trained by a qualified scholar cannot verify that what they are teaching is authentic.

Ijazah in Quran Recitation

Every tutor who delivers our online quran tajweed classes holds Ijazah in the narration of Hafs ‘an Asim. This means their recitation was verified by a scholar, who was verified by their teacher, in a chain that connects back to the Prophet, peace be upon him. When you or your child learns from our tutors, the recitation they receive carries a verified scholarly lineage.

Separate Tracks for Kids and Adults

Tajweed for kids requires a different pedagogical approach than Tajweed for adults. Our tutors who teach children aged 4 to 12 are specifically trained in early childhood learning: shorter attention windows, visual and auditory repetition, reward-based engagement, and clear parent reporting. Our adult tutors are trained to work with students who already have years of incorrect habits to unlearn.

Al-Azhar Graduates and Equivalent Institutions

We have both male and female teachers available for all plans. Sisters learning noorani qaida and parents who want a female tutor for their daughter can request this at enrollment. All female tutors hold the same qualifications as male tutors.

Male and Female Tutors Available

All plans have both male and female tutors available. Sisters and parents who want a female scholar for their daughter or for themselves make this selection at enrollment. Female tutors hold identical qualifications to male tutors.

Tajweed Rules We Teach | Makharij, Madd and Full Course

Every rule in the table below is a named, classified element of classical Tajweed scholarship. We explain each one in plain English during our tajweed classes online before applying it to Quranic text.

Tajweed Rule What It Is Why It Matters in Recitation
Makharij al-Huroof The precise physical origin of each Arabic letter in the mouth, throat, or nasal cavity Two letters that look similar can sound identical without correct Makharij, changing word meaning
Sifaat al-Huroof The qualities of each letter: heavy or light, soft or hard, with or without air flow Determines the texture and weight of each sound in Quran recitation
Qalqalah A subtle echo or vibration added to 5 specific letters when they appear with Sukun These 5 letters (Qaf, Taa, Ba, Jeem, Dal) should never be silent — they echo after stopping
Ghunna The nasal resonance held for 2 counts in Noon and Meem when they carry Tashdeed Ghunna is the most frequently occurring Tajweed rule in the Quran
Idgham Merging Noon Sakinah or Tanween into the following letter when specific letters follow Eliminates the separate Noon sound, creates smooth flow between words
Ikhfa Concealing Noon Sakinah or Tanween before 15 specific letters with a nasal hold Neither fully pronounced nor fully merged — a middle state unique to Arabic recitation
Iqlab Converting Noon Sakinah or Tanween into a Meem sound before Ba One of the most commonly mispronounced rules by non-Arab Muslims
Madd (Elongation) Stretching specific vowel sounds to 2, 4, or 6 counts based on the rule type Madd controls the rhythm of recitation — incorrect Madd breaks the measured tone commanded in the Quran
Waqf and Ibtida Rules of stopping at the end of a verse and starting again correctly Stopping in the wrong place can change the meaning of an ayah entirely

Most non-Arab Muslims have heard the word Tajweed but only know it means ‘reciting correctly.’ The rules above are what correctly means in specific, teachable, testable terms. When you learn quran online with tajweed through our course, you are not learning vague guidance to ‘sound better.’ You are learning a precise phonetic science that classical scholars spent centuries codifying.

Online Quran Classes with Tajweed | How Our Classes Run

Every class in our online quran classes with tajweed program is live, one-on-one, and delivered through Zoom or Skype. Here is the exact structure of each session.

Opening Revision - First 5 to 8 Minutes

Every session begins with the student reciting the section covered in the previous class. The tutor listens without interrupting, then provides feedback on the specific rules that were applied correctly and those that need more work. Revision before new material is not optional. It is how Tajweed knowledge moves from short-term memory to permanent recitation habit.

New Rule or Quran Section - 20 to 30 Minutes

The tutor introduces the new rule, demonstrates correct pronunciation, and asks the student to repeat. For a rule like Qalqalah, the tutor produces the echo on each of the five Qalqalah letters while the student listens, then asks the student to produce it on each letter, correcting in real time. For Quran application sessions, the tutor recites each verse first and the student follows, verse by verse.

Practice Exercises and Quran Application

Every Tajweed rule is practiced first in isolation, then in words, then in Quranic verses. A student who has just learned Ikhfa practices it on written exercise words before applying it in Surah Al-Baqarah. This sequence prevents students from applying a rule they half-understand to the Quran before the rule is solid.

Session Closing and Assignment

Every session ends with a specific practice assignment: a set of verses or a set of words containing the rules covered. The parent receives a written note within 30 minutes of the session ending, summarizing what was covered and what to practice before the next class.

Tajweed Classes Online | Our 4 Levels and What We Cover

Our online tajweed course runs across four levels. Students do not advance to the next level until their tutor confirms the current one is accurate. There is no calendar deadline. Accuracy before speed is the rule across all four levels.

Level Duration What Students Master
Level 1: Foundation 2 to 3 months Arabic letter recognition, correct Makharij from scratch, Harakat, basic Madd, Lam Shamsiyyah and Lam Qamariyyah
Level 2: Core Rules 3 to 4 months Noon Sakinah and Tanween (Ikhfa, Idgham, Iqlab, Izhar), Meem Sakinah, Qalqalah, Ghunna — the rules that appear on every page of the Quran
Level 3: Advanced Tajweed 4 to 5 months Advanced Madd categories (Madd Muttasil, Munfasil, Laazim), Sifaat al-Huroof in depth, Hafs 'an Asim recitation style, Waqf and Ibtida
Level 4: Full Quran Application Ongoing Applying all rules across all 30 Juz of the Quran, building toward Tarteel (slow, measured recitation), preparation for Ijazah

The Hafs ‘an Asim Narration Explained

The Quran was memorized and transmitted through multiple chains of narration. The most widely used in Pakistan, India, Turkey, and most of the non-Arab world is Hafs ‘an Asim: the narration of Hafs, transmitted from his teacher Asim, transmitted back to Ali ibn Abi Talib and Zaid ibn Thabit, companions of the Prophet. This is the narration printed in most Qurans worldwide and the one we teach.

Tarteel: What the Command in Surah Al-Muzzammil Means

Tarteel linguistically means clarity, spacing, and measured delivery. In the context of Quran recitation it means the measured, slow recitation where rules are applied without rushing, where the listener can hear each letter distinctly, and where the reciter is conscious of the meaning of what they recite. Completing Level 4 of our curriculum builds toward Tarteel. It is the highest accessible level of Quran recitation for non-scholar Muslims.

Parents Say

What Parents Say | Tajweed for Kids and Adults Reviews

My son is 8 years old. He finished the Noorani Qaida and started the Standard Tajweed plan. Within two months his Qalqalah was audible for the first time. His teacher noticed it, we noticed it, and when he recited to his grandfather over video call last Ramadan his grandfather cried. That is not an exaggeration.

Umm Yusuf, UK

I am 42 years old and have been reciting the Quran since childhood. I enrolled in the Intensive plan assuming I needed only minor corrections. The tutor identified 11 consistent errors in my first session alone — 6 Makharij issues, 3 Madd length errors, and 2 Ikhfa positions I was pronouncing incorrectly. Eight months later I can recite Surah Al-Baqarah with all rules applied. I wish I had done this decades ago.

Brother Khalid, USA

I am a revert and I joined the Starter plan to learn to recite Al-Fatiha for my Salah. My tutor started from the Arabic alphabet and Makharij in the first session. By month three I could recite Al-Fatiha and six short Surahs with the rules applied correctly. I know because my tutor confirmed each letter before we moved on.
